Due to the lack of awareness about natural breast health maintenance this page and much of this website have been dedicated to the education of the public. Breast Cancer and many types of breast problems and discomfort are due to this lack of awareness. One issue that must be addressed early on is that much of this is due to social stigmas associated with women's breasts. Women are told to hide their breasts as if to be ashamed of them. This is one of the lingering types of oppression that still effects women today. Men do not allow women to go outside without covering their breasts. Women can still, today in 2002 and in the country that stands for freedom, America, be arrested for going outside without covering their breasts. Why is it that men can go outside without covering their breasts and NOT be arrested? It is simply discrimination and is no different then the women in the middle east being forced to wear a veil. It should be women's choice if they cover their breasts, not the law.
Bras and any tight or restrictive garments around the breasts can increase the risks of developing breast cancers and fibrocystic breasts as well as cause discomforts. Unfortunately, because of the lack of awareness of what it takes to maintain healthy breasts and reduce these unnecessary risks some areas of the united states still do not allow professional massage therapists to work on the breasts even if they are trained in the specific techniques designed especially for the breasts. Fortunately, however, some areas of the United States do allow it and more of them are being enlightened to the overwhelming evidence that this is most likely one of the most important health issues of our time and professional breast massage and breast health therapies should be allowed everywhere. These therapies when done often enough (at least 2 to 3 times a week!) can reduce the risk of developing breast cancer by up to 21 times! Breast Cancer and deaths due to breast cancer are higher than they have ever been and the incidence of breast cancer is getting worse all the time. At this time, nearly 1 out of every 7 women, statistically, will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Breast massage may be one of the best natural "preventative" cancer methods available, quite possibly the best available "preventative" cancer method for the breasts period.

Other issues about breasts that deserves some attention is the way that many Americans view breasts. It seems that many Americans consider breasts to be sexual organs, but we beg to differ. We think it is about time that everyone takes a careful look at this way of thinking because if we all agreed that breasts are exclusively sexual organs than that would mean that every human being in America who has suckled their mother's breasts as an infant has performed sexual incest and that would make the breast feeding mothers not only incestual but pedophiles too! We do not think that anyone would want to have to accept this view, but it would be a true statement according to the current social view in many parts of America! No, you see, actually breasts are functional organs with a very sacred purpose, NOT a base sexual purpose. We do not argue that they may be one of the sensitive areas and many people may enjoy them during sex, but this does not make them exclusive to sex. After all, if we are going to classify any area used or enjoyed during sex as an exclusive sexual organ, then what about those people who make love to every part of the body? Are they one big walking sexual organ? Wouldn't that make the idea of hugs a whole lot more troublesome? Seriously, the whole idea of how we Americans view breasts is truly that ridiculous. The only sexual organs that should NOT be massaged by a massage therapist are the genitals (genitals being classified as: the male or female reproductive organs located between the legs). Much of the reason many people are insecure and feel bad about themselves is due to this social stigma, which tells us that we have good parts of our bodies and bad parts, and this is completely FALSE. All of our body parts are sacred and deserve respect. If we continue down this road of covering and shame and do not give our bodies the respect and care that they deserve, then we are doomed to face the consequences of degenerative disorders and ailments of all kinds. Please do not just take our word on this important issue but feel free to read more about it and check out some of the interesting links from other webpages about breast health and breast massage and care that we have provided for your convenience on our links page within this website.

We feel so strongly about this issue that we have started to teach classes on it to help improve breast health awareness because education is the best defense you women have to keeping yourselves healthy. We have also created "Divine Intervention Therapies" Massage & Spa as a volunteer public service provider based on donation only in order to avoid troublesome beaurocracy and to make these very important services available to women everywhere and under the protection of "Good Samaritan" laws. Also to ensure the safety of both the women clients and the practitioners we have very detailed "Client Information Forms" for women clients to sign so that it is absolutely certain to both them and the practitioner that this is a professional treatment to be performed by a professional therapist who has been trained in the specific techniques used during the massage and nothing more.

Running head: Burn Your Bras

"Women, Burn Your Bras!"

Women, Burn Your Bras!

Cancer is a major problem for women, especially in America, which has one of the highest rates of breast cancer. According to Dr. Nicolas Leroy, a holistic women's physician, currently one out of every eight women acquire breast cancer in the course of their lives. These rates of breast cancer seem to increase over time, especially in developed countries (2001). A quotation from Dr. Nick's website, a site that he has devoted to breast cancer, names statistics that show how the problem of breast cancer has only been getting worse despite modern medicine's efforts to stop it:
Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women between the ages of 35 and 54. In 1960, a woman's lifetime risk for getting breast cancer was 1 in 20, now it is approaching 1 in 7. In 1971 President Richard Nixon declared the “War on Cancer”, but despite the efforts of conventional medicine and research, this war is being miserably lost (2001, ll.2-6).
A study cited from iVillage’s complementary medicine website, a site devoted to health, states that there are approximately 43,500 deaths a year from breast cancer (2001). This is a scary problem considering that we are more advanced in technology and medicine than ever before in history and the problem appears to be getting worse, not better. Modern medicine offers solutions that are almost as bad as the problem. These current treatments range from invasive and sometimes debilitating surgeries to radiation, which has been shown to increase risk of getting cancer, and chemotherapy, which causes great pain and discomfort along with a whole list of other less than desirable side effects. What is worse is that conventional medicine has little or no preventative methods for reducing the risk of developing breast cancer in the first place. The closest attempt they have at prevention is to advocate early detection, which merely discovers the cancer once a woman has already developed it. Do you call that prevention? To show how our American Cancer Society feels about possible causes for breast cancer and about prevention we can also look at Dr. Nick’s website:
In its 1998 Cancer Facts for Women, the ACS continues to imply that there are no known avoidable causes of breast cancer, and goes even further stating “the biggest risk factor for breast cancer is being a woman”. Incredibly, the ACS recommends early detection as the “best defense” against breast cancer; giving women false confidence that mammography can somehow protect them against breast cancer… Mammograms rely on the focusing of x-rays… On the breast. X-ray radiation itself, however, is known to cause breast cancer. (2001, ll.15-23; 165)
Calculating your risk factor may be helpful in planning preventative strategies. In order to calculate your risk it is necessary to be familiar with what those risks are, and to assist you we have included some current risk factors cited from iVillage’s complimentary medicine website, a site dedicated to women's health:     Perhaps, the worst risk factor of all is the lack of awareness of preventative measures that women can use to greatly reduce their risk factor for breast cancer. Educations in preventative measures, which reduce the risk, are the best way to prevent breast cancer. Two methods that greatly reduce the risk of breast cancer are trashing the bras, and getting regular and frequent breast massage.
Our modern medical leaders lack of concern with prevention only magnifies this problem and they only focus their attention on treatment once cancer is found. Dr. Nicolas Leroy’s website addresses this problem:
Much of the blame for this trend can be placed with the misdirected efforts of the cancer establishment, the formidable lobby consisting of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the American Cancer Society (ACS), and the NCI- and ACS-funded cancer clinics in universities, hospitals, and cancer centers. Rather than identify ways to prevent breast cancer, the cancer establishment instead allocates the majority of its resources on drug therapies to treat cancer. The problem with this approach is evident. It is better to prevent cancer, if possible, rather than be forced to treat it once it develops (2001, ll.7-15)
Medical studies have shown that bras are another major contributing risk factor to breast cancer. Some have begun to call breast cancer, bra cancer. Many of the reasons that bras increase risk of breast cancer also apply to women who have breast implants (augmentation) due to the fact that implants immobilize the breasts as well and cannot be easily removed like a bra. On Dr. Michael White’s website he lists some of the problems with brassieres, “Brassieres can restrict blood flow, increase heat, force shallow breathing, lower blood oxygen, increase breathing rates, [and] restrict lymphatic function” (2001, ll. 3-4). Also listed on Dr. White’s website are quotes from other experiments and clinical studies concerning bras and breast cancer risk: “[In] 1991 Researchers at Harvard University published a medical journal article on breast cancer risk. As a side issue of their paper, they mention that the women in their study that did not wear bras had a 60% lower rate of breast cancer than the women who wore bras” (2001, ll.110-112). Women concerned about the shape of their breast may argue that it is necessary to wear a bra in order to help keep their breasts’ shape and to prevent sagging, but studies named on Dr. White’s website prove otherwise, “Researchers in Japan published a study [in 1991] on bras and sagging, in which they proved that a bra can actually increase breast sagging, rather than the opposite. This effect was most noticeable in larger breasted women” (2001, ll.115-117). A great book linking bras to breast cancer mentioned on Dr. White’s website is Dressed to Kill written by Sydney Singer and Soma Grismaijer:
Their study included almost 4600 women, half of [them] had breast cancer and half of [them] did not. They found that the more hours per day a bra is worn, the higher the rate of breast cancer and [the] women who did not wear bras [had] a dramatically reduced rate of breast cancer (2001, ll.121-124)
Another major risk factor related to bras mentioned on Dr. White’s website concerns the increase in the heat of the breast tissue, which reduces the presence of cancer fighting hormones such as melatonin which “Has anti-cancer activities, [because] it is an antioxidant and can prevent DNA damage, and … is intimately involved in the immune system and can bind directly to T helper cells” (2001, ll.161-162). A study by Lee, Hyun, and Tokura also cited on Dr. White’s website shows the facts, “Wearing a girdle and/or bra lowers the levels of the hormone, melatonin by 60 percent” (2001, ll.156-157).
Lymphatic function is also very important to help reduce the risk of breast cancer because the lymph nodes are part of the body’s immune system, helping eliminate toxins. Bras and implants drastically reduce lymphatic function by immobilizing the breasts, which increases risk for breast cancer by reducing the efficacy of the immune system. To draw attention to the effect of bras and implants on lymphatic function and its importance we can look at another quotation from Dr. White’s website where he notes a British study:
The scientists suspect bras suppressing the lymphatic system—the network of vessels that flushes toxic waste from the body, [causes problems]. They plan to further research into what happens if the lymphatic system is blocked, and whether this leads to an accumulation of toxins in the breast tissue…Prof. Mansell said the work is of particular concern because the garments appear to be compressing the body at the outer upper most part of the breast—the area where 80% of the lymph flows (2001, ll.267-271).
Dr. White’s website quotes Michael Schacter, M.D., on the negative effects of bras and implants on the lymphatic system:
Any activity that will help to remove accumulated toxins in the breasts will help to reduce the chances of developing breast cancer…. It is the job of the lymphatic system …to help drain toxic substances from tissues and poor lymphatic drainage may play a role in breast cancer formation…. [Lymph flow] is very sensitive to constricting external pressure, which can impede its flow. Bras and other external tight clothing can impede flow (2001, ll.303-307).

"Breast tissue is comprised of fat, glands, blood vessels, milk ducts, connective tissue, nerves and a lacy network of lymphatic vessels. The lymphatic fluid leaves the breast through this network of lymphatic vessels that empty into a system of kidney-shaped glands which filter lymph fluid called lymph nodes. These lymph nodes are linked throughout the body and act as a major line of defense against the spread of disease in the body. When lymphatic vessels and nodes become restricted through lack of physical movement, or clothing that is too tight, the body’s defense system begins to break down and disease can set in." Taken from The Medicine Garden-Breast Massage Page
"Here is where all our lymph nodes and the major "stations" are located at in our breasts. As you can see, it's a busy place and even MORE reason to massage them on a regular basis to keep the lymph moving. Better out than in, is our maxim. Here is an enlargement of a lymph node. These stations cannot be under rated or taken advantage of. Imagine, wearing a bra for 16 hours a day and what THAT does to the lymph that is trying to get out of there to be eliminated by the body, but can't! Another reason NOT to wear a bra, ladies." Taken from The Medicine Garden-Breast Massage Page

Some shocking statistics on a website titled Breast Massage for Health, a site dedicated to breast health, name the results of a recent study:
Over 4700 women (2056 previously diagnosed with breast cancer, 2674 never diagnosed with breast cancer) indicated that there was a positive correlation between breast cancer and the length of time that women wore bras per day:
· Those who wore a bra all day long (defined in the study as any period more than 12 hours) had statistically 21 times greater risk of breast cancer than those who only wore a bra for only a part of the day (defined in the study as any period of up to 12 hours).
· Women who wore their bras all day and night (essentially 24 hours per day) had a five times greater chance of developing breast cancer than those who wore it all day long (1998, ll.12-19).
Obviously one of the greatest ways to lower your risk for breast cancer is to try to keep them cool and moving, so burn your bras and try to do other things that will promote lymphatic fluid movement throughout the breast tissue, such as exercise and breast massage.
As a professionally certified and licensed Myomassologist and massage therapist as well as traditional Nuat Thai medical massage instructor and certified spa body treatment therapist, I know of specific massage methods and spa treatments which would greatly help to increase lymphatic flow and help detoxify the breast tissue. One modality of massage called Manual Lymphatic Drainage would help to promote healthy lymphatic function and increase lymph flow in the breasts. Also there are many detoxification treatments which help to eliminate toxins from the body, such as seaweed breast masks or seaweed body-wraps including the breasts, and Salt Glow body polishes and scrubs, as well as sea salt bath formulas and hydrotherapy with underwater water-jet massage including specialized aromatherapy. I recommend that all women have their breasts massaged daily or as often as possible to avoid toxic build-up and stagnation of lymphatic fluids and to promote the healthy function of breast tissue and glandular function. This can either be done by a professional or women can do self massage, though it may be necessary to find out how to do the techniques correctly by taking a class or having a professional demonstrate the proper procedures for accurate performance and adequate results. One downfall to self-massage is that it is difficult to perform due to the type of strokes necessary which are hard for one to duplicate with the arms attached slightly above and to the side of the breasts. It is easy for a trained therapist because they have a direct frontal approach that allows much more versatility in range of motion and more variety of techniques to draw from. Perhaps you should schedule an appointment today.
When it comes to the health of your breasts, you should either try to get rid of bras or try alternatives such as loose fitting camisoles. Also it is important to lower your risk by having maintenance breast massages on a regular basis, preferably daily. These lifestyle changes are proven to be the best defense you have against breast cancer by dramatically lowering your risk factor. From looking at the facts we can see that women need to take an active role in the health of their breasts. Maybe you should schedule an appointment today!

More Information About the Health & Beauty Bust Treatment©

HEALTH & BEAUTY BUST TREATMENT©

This treatment has been designed to improve the health and beauty of the breasts and to help reduce the risk of breast cancer by encouraging the flow of lymphatic fluids throughout the breast tissue, removing toxins, and to enhance the shape and firmness of the breasts as well. This treatment is essential to any women who wish to protect themselves from cystic breasts and to reduce their risk of developing breast cancer. This treatment is also especially needed for women who have a higher risk factor for developing breast cancer or fibro-cystic breasts. These are just a few of the risk factors:

If you have any of the above risk factors it is highly recommended that you do something to help reduce your risk. *This treatment will help you to do just that, while enhancing the beauty of your breasts as well. This is simply a very effective preventative method to be used as part of a regular health maintenance program. This treatment simply reduces the risk from having implants or wearing a bra and works best if performed at least a few times a week (ideally daily, but no less than once a week). Implants and wearing bras have been shown to increase the risk of developing breast cancer by over 60% and some studies have shown that it may be as high as 21 times the risk!! We can help you to avoid this risk if you get this treatment, which has been designed especially to help women against such a threat. By helping to counteract these risk factors, by having this treatment on a regular basis, can reduce your risk by up to 21 times!!!

The procedure is as follows: A very light dry exfoliation (to remove dead skin cells and promote lymphatic fluid flow), a cleansing lotion or oil (to cleanse the area for mask application), a detoxifying mask (to remove toxins, help increase breast firmness, enhance shape and lift breasts), and finally a very nice, light, and thorough lymphatic massage of the breasts with a finishing lotion combined with special essential oils to compliment the ongoing effect of the whole treatment (recommended to leave essential oils on breasts for at least 4 hours before washing off). (Also note: This treatment is especially designed for the breasts and therefore clients need to be aware that these areas will be worked on thoroughly and include the “entire” breasts.)

It is also recommended to all of our female clients to try to go without a bra as much as possible, ideally never wear a bra. The wearing of bras has been proven to increase the risk of fibro-cystic breasts, breast cancer, and also has been linked to pectoral myalsia, trapezius myalsia, and other structural disorders. To find out more about breast health, read the book titled “Dressed to Kill” by Sydney Singer and Soma Grismaijer, or check out some of the resources listed under the essay "Women Burn Your Bras!" above. You can also look at the descriptions for Breast Massage or Health & Beauty Bust Treatment© on our Service Descriptions page, or for anyone interested in classes/personal training/or "couples" classes in the Health & Beauty Bust Treatment© you can see the Classes Page.
To schedule an appointment you can click on our Appointments Page.
* Note: This is not a guarantee that you will not get breast cancer or have fibro-cystic breasts nor should it be considered as a medical treatment or used instead of seeing a primary care physician or doctor.

For the benefit of all the women viewing this site here are some pictures and small descriptions of techniques for "self breast massage" for healthy maintenance of the breasts and to help you and your therapist to reduce your risks of getting breast cancer. Also to see where these pictures came from you can go to BodyMechanics School-Self Care for Your Breasts ... there is also a video available for download at the bottom of the webpage, so you can see the techniques performed. We have added it here for your convienience, so to see the self breast massage video just click on the color picture shown here below. One of the many reasons to get a "Professional Breast Massage" even when you perform your own "self breast massage" is to insure that it is done properly and with optimum results! There is never a substitute for a thorough and Professional Breast Massage from a highly trained and certified therapist, because the self breast massage does not even compare. The professional Breast Massage is over one hour long and the self breast massage is about 15 minutes long tops, so if you think about it, there is a big difference. It is still good, however, to learn how to perform self-breast massage for between appointment maintenance and we encourage women to do it to improve their breast health and to lower their breast cancer risks.

Here are the breast self massage pictures:

You may wish to start out by liberally applying lotion or oils to your breasts to assist gliding over the skin and to avoid unnecessary discomfort.

  1. 1. Use very light strokes like petting a cat and sweep from just below the collar bone all the way down to the nipple, working one breast at a time. Then, using the same pressure sweep outward from the nipple in all directions like a spoke on a wheel, with the center being the nipple. Move in straight lines from the nipple out to the sides of the breast working the entire breast. You may wish to work each line one fingers width apart in a clockwise direction until you have worked the entire breast up to three times around. (Note: While doing this technique, try to feel for any changes. You may wish to try and take notes on every aspect of your breasts conditions, such as: lumpiness, shape, color, texture, conture, volume, symmetry, size, nipple appearance, and even temperature. Every month compare these qualities to see if there are any changes. If you notice any that are very noticeable, you should see your health care provider.)
  2. 2. Using both hands, cup the breast on either side with medium pressure and gently massage the breast sweeping from the outside of the breast towards the nipples.
  3. 3. Using the same cupping hands on either side of the breast and with medium pressure gently and slowly rotate your hands while sweeping from the outside of the breast towards the nipples. Do this in both directions at least 3 times.
  4. 4. Last you can do compressions on the breast. First, slowly compress with fingers on either side of the nipples, and then sweeping from the nipples outwards towards the sides of the breast. Second, Simply cup over the center of your breast with one hand and put your other hand over top of it, then compress the breast with medium to firm pressure (being sure not to hurt yourself, it should not be too painful, if it is lighten up a little bit) 1-3 times. Now you can repeat this on the other breast starting back at number one.
Here are a couple videos:

Here is an example of breast implant self-massage, which is also very important for women who have implants. To read more go to Breast Implant Massage (This link will take you to another web site, but you can just click on your browsers back button, if you have one, to return to this page). The professional Breast Massage is over one hour long and the self breast massage is less than 15 minutes tops, so if you think about it, there is a big difference. It is still good, however, to learn how to perform self-breast massage for between appointment maintenance and we encourage women to do it to improve their breast health and to lower their breast cancer risks. The technique shown below is one of the breast implant massage techniques known as displacement, which helps in post operative augmentation by avoiding what is known as "Capsule Contracture". Capsule contracture can cause augmented breasts to become unnaturally hard and can also in some cases cause them to shift or look abnormal. Not only is breast massage important for the health of women with augmented breasts, but it is also important to maintain the appearance and feel of the augmented breasts as well.
